Why your current broadband may not do what it says on the tin

A 1MB per second download speed is faster than a 512KB per second download speed, right?

Not necessarily. The quoted speed is not always a true indication of the speed you will get for your money. Other factors will have major effects on the speed you will achieve including your contention ratio and your distance from the exchange.
Bone of contention

Why is this so important you may ask? Simple. You may be unaware but your broadband connection is actually shared amongst a group of other subscribers. You contention ratio is essentially the number of our subscribers you share with.
Many businesses are actually on a domestic broadband contract and it is not uncommon for domestic broadband to be shared between anything up to 50 subscribers. That means a contention ratio of 50:1, no surprise that when everyone hits Facebook at lunchtime, getting Internet access seems like wading through marmalade.
Odds of 5:1? I’ll take that bet

Business broadband offerings generally have lower contention ratios than domestic, typically 20:1 or sometimes 10:1 which is why business broadband tends to be more expensive. However our provider ensures excellent speed by offering a class leading contention ratio of just 5:1.
Speed + low contention = better broadband

Although not necessarily the cheapest, our supplier offers an industry-leading combination of speed, low contention and cost effectiveness. You might find cheaper business broadband out there but you’re unlikely to find better value.
